The Nepantla Doctrine
Status refers to the development of each intellectual or institutional component, not to the legal or operational status of Nepantla as an institution.
The Doctrine states what Nepantla examines and holds as principle. It is a framework of enquiry rather than belief: a way of naming the conditions that produce transition and the dispositions that carry a person or an institution through it.
Section 02.1
The Nepantla Condition
A state of consequential in-betweenness.
The Nepantla Condition describes the period in which a person, organisation or society has left one settled arrangement and has not yet arrived at another. Its defining feature is not distress but indeterminacy: the ordinary interpretive tools still work, and they no longer explain enough.
The Doctrine treats this condition as a legitimate object of study — describable, comparable across scales, and consequential for how decisions get made under uncertainty.
Section 02.2
The Five Causes
Five recognisable entrances into the condition. Each is named with a gate: a threshold rather than a symbol of belief.
- 1Identity CrisisMirror Gate
The self one has been no longer recognises itself. The question is not who am I, but which of my selves is still true.
- 2LossSerpent Gate
Something ends — a person, a role, a certainty — and the structures built around it must be rebuilt or released.
- 3Success Without MeaningJaguar Gate
The objective is achieved and does not answer. Attainment exposes the difference between a goal and a purpose.
- 4ContradictionEclipse Gate
Two commitments both hold and cannot both be honoured. Transition begins where the contradiction can no longer be deferred.
- 5CallingBridge Gate
A pull towards something not yet justified by evidence. The task is discernment rather than certainty.

The Seven Virtues
Dispositions the Doctrine considers necessary for passing through transition well. They are described, not scored.

Section 02.4
Doctrine as discipline
A doctrine that cannot be questioned becomes an obstacle to the understanding it was created to serve. The Nepantla Doctrine is therefore held under revision: its statements are expected to be tested, contested and refined as research develops.
Its function is to keep enquiry oriented — so that intelligence, research and governance answer to a stated purpose rather than to convenience.
